This transcription preserves only the following features of the original printed text:

typeface--the REND attribute is used to specify the font used to render an element where the element's rendition differs from that of its parent, in this text the only values used are RO (roman) and IT (italic), the HI element is used (with no REND attribute specified) to indicate that an element is rendered differently from its parent (i.e., in Roman if its parent is Italic, or in Italic if its parent is Roman);

typesize and lineation--no attempt has been made to preserve lineation in prose, or to record information about type size;

spelling and normalization--the original spelling has been preserved; dropped, missing, or mis-shaped letters have been silently emended. No attempt has been made to mark use of ligatured or other variant letter forms;

correction--the corrections listed in the errata in the back matter of the 1671 edition have been applied and tagged using ADD, CORR etc.;

interpretation--names which appear in non-Italic font in PR have been tagged NAME, in PR, changes of narrative voice have also been marked using the MILESTONE tag, UNIT=SP with the N attribute taking values "Satan", "the Son", "narr" (narrator) or "God the Father", in SA, speaker changes are marked using the WHO attribute, linked by IDREF to the cast list in the front matter
